If you’re looking for one of the most powerful ways to showcase your expertise and prove the value of your products or services, case studies should form a key part of your marketing strategy.
Why? Because they use real examples to show how your business has solved a customer’s problem. They give credibility, demonstrate results and create a story that your potential clients can relate to.

Why case studies work so well
In B2B marketing, your audience is looking for reassurance. They want to know, “Does this company understand my problems?” “Can they deliver real results?” “Will my investment pay off?”
A well-written case study answers those questions. It builds trust, provides social proof, and positions your business as the reliable choice.
What to include in a case study
Strong case studies are structured, clear and focused on results. They should include:
The challenge - What problem was the client facing?
The decision process - did they consider other solutions, and why they chose you
The solution - how your product or service was implemented.
The outcome - tangible results, data or success metrics.
A customer quote - ideally highlighting your service and with metrics
The key is to tell a story. Instead of just listing features, take the reader on a journey – problem, solution and success.
What your audience wants to see
Decision-makers want specifics. Generic phrases like “it saved time” are pointless. They want measurable results:
Reduced delivery time by 30%
Save us £5,000 annually
Numbers add weight and make your story more persuasive.

Approaching your customer
Some companies worry about asking their customers for a case study, but most clients are happy to be featured once they see the benefits. I’ve written hundreds of case studies over the years, and I’ve found that the best way is to contact the customer and explain the process. I reassure them that nothing will be published without their approval. I explain that I’ll only take up a minimal amount of their time and that we can chat over the phone or I can email some questions, whichever they prefer.
Typical questions to ask your customers include:
What problems were you facing when you chose our product/service?
Did you look at different options?
Why did you decide on our product/service?
How did the implementation/installation go? Were there any challenges, and how did we help?
What results have you seen?
Can we include a quotation? (I sometimes draft one if they’re unsure what to say).
If they don’t want the company name mentioned, that’s fine. But explain that being named provides them with free exposure. If they still don't want you to use their name, you can just refer to the sector/industry, but the story won't have the same impact.

How to use your case study
The beauty of case studies is their versatility. You can repurpose the story across multiple channels:
Your website - in your resources/information hub
Blog posts - discussing key lessons and tips from the story
Video testimonials - hearing it directly from the client adds impact
Social media - share snippets, stats or quotes
Email campaigns - nurturing prospects with success stories
Sales presentations - proof points to back up your pitch
Brochures - additional value to your service or product’s features and benefits with success stories
Every time you use a case study, you’re saying that “we’ve done it before, and we can do it for you.” It provides concrete evidence that your product or service delivers tangible results.
Why case studies matter
Case studies aren’t just another piece of content. They’re one of the most persuasive tools in B2B marketing, combining storytelling, data and social proof in one powerful package.
Produced in the right way, they help to strengthen relationships with existing customers, demonstrate credibility and help you to win new business.
